Activation key has already been used on a new fresh instance

Hello community,

When I’m trying to reactivate my license key now I get this error:

Activation key already used on this instance
I have already tried this:
n8n license:clear executed successfully, license was cleared
Instance ID deleted from the SQLite DB
Restarted n8n after each operation
Even so, I cannot activate with this error. Seems that the key is still tied to the old instance at n8n license servers.
Is there a way to release/reset the key server-side or maybe there is another workaround?

You are absolutely right about what is happening here. Because you already cleared the local DB and instance ID, the lock is 100% sitting on n8n’s licensing servers.

Since n8n doesn’t provide a CLI command to force a server-side release from your end, here are the two ways to bypass this:

1. If it is a paid/enterprise key: You will need to reach out directly to n8n support and ask them to manually release the instance lock for that specific key. 2. If it is a free community key: The absolute fastest workaround is to simply register for a fresh community key and apply it to your current instance.
