As I try to activate the key, this error message is returned :
Activation failed. Activation key has already been used on this instance.
@know-how This usually means that your current n8n instance is active with that activation key, and you can always validate that by vising the Usage And Plans section it will tell that:

Hi @Anshul_Namdev , I am not very proficient in this platform and so I want to reconfirm what you said. Does it mean that there is no need for me to do anything to access the forever free features?
@know-how That’s correct! If your instance is already showing as active with that license key (which the error message suggests), then you do not need to take any further action to access the features included in your forever-free plan.
Your n8n should be fully operational. To put your mind completely at ease, you can just visit the Settings > Usage and Plans section in your n8n interface. There, you’ll be able to visually confirm that your plan is active and see all the available features.

The key difference is that the free self-hosted license (Community Edition) unlocks Folders, Debug in Editor, and Custom Execution Data, which are not available in the completely unregistered version. However, for a licensed self-hosted version (Enterprise), the major advantages over the free edition are team collaboration features (SSO, workflow sharing), advanced security and management (external secrets, variables), and production scalability (high availability, log streaming). Critically, the free license only permits internal business use, while a commercial license is required for embedding n8n in a product you sell or similar business models.
