All I want to do is read my personal WhatsApp messages, I don’t even need to reply to them. I just want to monitor my chats and maybe send myself an email or Telegram notification when something important comes up, purely for personal assistant purposes.
Is the WhatsApp Business API really the only option for this?

So WhatsApp has severe (in my opinion) limitations.
You can’t read your personal WhatsApp messages, via automation.
If you use WhatsApp business API, you loose access to the app - so you won’t even be able to respond as you normally would - it all goes via automation, so you’d have to use some sort of interface if you wanted to manually respond to messages. Further to this you’ll be charged per message and get all sorts of restrictions about when and what you can send.
If you do try any workaround to read/reply to personal WhatsApp messages, you are at a critical risk of account ban. This isn’t to be taken lightly, see just how many personal accounts and business accounts receive instant, final bans without notice. If your using meta for a business fb page, LinkedIn etc there’s potential risk of loosing ALL accounts.
