I wanted to ask if n8n has a public directory where you can host images with the Write Binary File node and then access them via URL.

No sorry. We have sadly nothing like that and is currently also not planned. But you can google for such a service and then upload the image to it via the HTTP Request node.
Just to add to this one, You could in theory use the webhook node with Respond to Webhook to create your own service for this sort of thing if you wanted to.
