I generally dont think that you need to keep your n8n always up to date until there is some serious bug or a exponential feature came out, i would recommend whenever you want to update please make sure that you are updating to a version of n8n which is very stable & very less buggy, and that said i would say update your n8n manually once 1.5 months, and that is really it. (i personally have a script which automatically updates my n8n instance to the latest stable version in every 1 month)
Also one thing that if you care about new features consider switching to n8n cloud that is by far the best for this as you will get automatic updates and ofc very seamless integration with applications.

Given the recent set of critical CVEs associated with n8n, Iād actually recommend updating the stable version weekly if you are self-hosting it.
