Yes, it’s a realistic path — I’m building an automation product with n8n as a core part of the stack, so not pure freelancing, but I’ve seen what works for getting traction.
A few honest observations:

Upwork is noisy — the signal-to-noise ratio for automation work is low and rates are often compressed. Direct outreach to businesses that clearly have repetitive manual processes (invoicing, lead follow-up, report generation) converts better.

Sell the outcome, not the tool — clients don’t buy “n8n workflows”, they buy “this saves your team 10 hours a week on lead processing.” The technical setup is invisible to them.

First gigs usually come from your existing network — even a small thing for someone you know, done well, generates referrals.

Document your workflows — sharing builds (even simple ones) on LinkedIn or here establishes credibility fast in this space.
