Best practice: AI models/LLMs in the n8n process – Which AI do you use for automation and content?

Hello everyone, I am currently working on complex n8n processes in the Cloud Pro Plan and would like to specifically integrate various AI models (“LLMs,” OpenAI, HuggingFace, Claude, etc.) for automation, content generation, and decision logic.

How do you integrate AI into your workflows? Do you use HTTP requests, your own node packages, external services?

Which LLMs/providers (OpenAI, GPT-4, Claude, Google Gemini, local models, etc.) have you had the most success with (in terms of quality, speed, cost efficiency)?

Are there any community nodes or NoCode integration patterns that you can recommend?

Which AI models or services deliver particularly robust/reliable results for content, routing, or decision tasks?

Do you use workflow automation with multiple AI models in the mix (if so, how do you route/switch this technically in n8n)?

What experiences have you had with self-hosted vs. cloud/third-party AI?

Mainly with AI Agent node

I’ve been using OpenAI, Claude, Google Gemini. In long term solutions I’m using mainly OpenAI (with model changes between ie. mini, 4/5 etc)

Only as “Fallback model” in AI Agent node

Integrating AI into your n8n workflows can be done in several ways, depending on your needs. The most straightforward method is to use n8n’s built-in AI nodes, such as the AI Agent, which are designed to simplify the process. For more direct control, you can always use the standard HTTP Request node to communicate with any AI model’s API. Additionally, the community has developed numerous helpful nodes that can make integrating specific services much easier.

When it comes to choosing the right AI model, different providers excel in different areas. For top-tier content creation and complex logical reasoning, OpenAI’s GPT-4 and GPT-4o models are generally considered the best. If your work involves analyzing long documents or processing large amounts of text, Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet is an excellent and cost-effective choice. Google’s Gemini models are fantastic all-rounders, often providing great performance at a lower cost, and they are particularly strong at extracting structured data from text. For tasks where data privacy is paramount, running local models with a tool like Ollama is the ideal solution, as it keeps all your information in-house and eliminates API costs.

If you’re looking for a specific community tool to make your life easier, I highly recommend the Model Selector Node. It’s a brilliant tool that allows you to dynamically route tasks to different AI models within a single workflow, avoiding complicated “If” or “Switch” branches.

For specific tasks, you’ll find that some models are more reliable than others. GPT-4 and Claude consistently deliver robust results for content generation and decision-making. When using AI for decisions, it’s a pro-tip to set the model’s “temperature” setting to 0 to ensure you get predictable, consistent outputs. For routing tasks or data extraction, Gemini is often a very effective and fast choice.

You can also combine multiple AI models in a single, sophisticated workflow. A common pattern is to set up a “supervisor” agent that first assesses an incoming task and then delegates it to a specialized “worker” agent. For instance, the supervisor could send a content request to GPT-4 and a data analysis task to Gemini. This is technically managed in n8n by using logic, like the Model Selector Node, to route the data accordingly.

Finally, the decision between using a cloud service versus a self-hosted model comes down to a trade-off. Cloud AI is easy to set up, highly scalable, and gives you immediate access to the most powerful models, but it comes with ongoing costs and potential data privacy concerns. Self-hosting provides complete privacy and control with no API fees, but it requires the technical knowledge to set up and maintain the necessary hardware and software
