Can i just levarage n8n to let customers define pre/post steps for a OOB agent so that we dont have the pre/post interceptors present inside agent itself

this is what i heard - n8n POST steps that intercept streaming responses from an agent will buffer the entire response, breaking the real-time UX. Though this isn’t documented as a limitation explicitly — it’s an architectural consequence of how workflow nodes exchange complete data items, is it true? if so, how to overcome the UX concern?

n8n isn’t designed for inline stream processing. While nodes like AI Agent and Respond to Webhook can stream, any standard node in between will wait for a complete data item before processing—breaking the real-time experience.

For example, placing a “Post-step” node after a streaming agent forces it to buffer the entire response, ruining the live UX.

to Keep Streaming Smooth, you can Use Respond Immediately or parallel branches to handle background tasks without delaying the user.
Run “Pre-step” sub-workflows before the agent starts and “Post-step” sub-workflows after streaming ends.
Only use nodes with the Enable Streaming toggle in your main response path.

Hi @bhaskar1 i would say yes, node placed after a streaming AI Agent will buffer the full response, to avoid this just leverage sub workflows to complete the UX tasks , so the sub flow would be outside the flow, and keep only streaming-enabled nodes, so that it would not disturb the main chain.

Thanks for the response A_A4, anshul, one more followup question is, for OOB agent if there are multiple OOB/custom workflows already defined around it in N8N however, customer still wants to have must have pre/post steps against the agent. Is it possible to run these pre/post in all the workflows? or is it necessary to touch all the workflows to insert pre/post?

to avoid touching every workflow, you can centralize your logic using these two patterns:

1. Create one master workflow containing your pre-steps, the agent, and post-steps. Use the Execute Workflow node in your other workflows to call this single “Wrapper” instead of the agent directly.

2.For “must-have” post-steps that handle cleanup or logging, set a single Error Trigger workflow in your n8n settings. This automatically runs a universal post-step for any workflow that fails, without needing to edit them individually.

there will be OOB workflows around the OOB agent, later customer may come and define pre/post steps against the OOB agent, i am still wondering how existing workflows can start including newly defined pre/post steps of an agent?

You might consider replacing the Agent node with an Execute Workflow node to act as a “Middleware Proxy”—this lets you add or tweak pre/post steps in one place and have them apply everywhere instantly. Another thought is to assign a Global Error Trigger in your n8n settings to automatically inject universal post-step logic, like logging or cleanup, across all flows at once. You could also use Environment Variables for context injection, allowing agents to pull updated pre-step data through expressions remotely. Finally, think about routing agent outputs to a central Webhook or Message Queue for event-driven processing; this keeps your post-steps independent and ensures they don’t interfere with the streaming UX.

With Execute Workflow, we will have pre-agent-post nodes where pre and post nodes are placeholders. Later customer can come and apply custom logic inside the pre/post nodes. It can be webhook, or a MCP or a simple JS/Python script… Is this the fair statement?

Bottom line is to achieve agent extensibility without having interceptor code sitting inside the OOB agent and agent calling the pre/post steps.

One followup question, how can agent extensions defined in n8n be discovered in runtime ? does it require us to publish this metadata from N8N to UMS? what is the industry recommendation? it is in same context so, raising here, if it is not relavant then i can create a new thread

HI @bhaskar1 i would say they are defined at run time although you can try using MCPs to some degree and let AI model define the URL that way you can connect a lot of stuff to it and that so AI can define a lot of different operations i do not recommend that but that is something you can try.
