Hi everyone!
I’m Hugo, co-founder of BikUp, a fast-growing bike-rental marketplace launched in early 2025. We help people all across France rent their bike (cargo, gravel, road, e-bike…) to others nearby. Think Airbnb, but for bikes — simple, local and sustainable.
We’re only two running the entire company, and the growth has been intense. With traction comes responsibilities:
-
regulatory obligations,
-
financial reporting,
-
customer communication,
-
fraud checks,
-
DAC7 compliance,
-
marketing workflows,
-
and everything that comes with running a marketplace.
Very quickly, we realized that we couldn’t scale without automation.
And this is exactly where n8n became a core part of our infrastructure.
Why n8n Became Essential for BikUp
When you’re two founders managing a national marketplace, the challenge is simple:
automate everything that can be automated — reliably, transparently, and with full control.
n8n gives us:
-
a self-hosted, privacy-friendly workflow engine,
-
the freedom to integrate any API (Stripe, ERPNext, PostHog, MailerSend…),
-
the ability to ship automation for things we’d normally need a backend engineer for,
-
the flexibility to adapt quickly as regulations change.
We now run dozens of workflows that save us several hours every day.
How We Use n8n Today
Here’s a concrete overview of what we automated using n8n.
1. Marketing & User Activation
-
Automated welcome emails based on user type (owner / renter)
-
PostHog → CRM sync to segment users
-
Automated reminders for incomplete profiles
-
WhatsApp & email alerts when a listing is missing photos or pricing
-
Monthly rentability report sent automatically to bike owners
2. Operations & Marketplace Management
-
Fraud detection checks based on velocity, location patterns, bike photos
-
Alerts when a booking looks suspicious
-
Automatic enrichment of bike listings (brand/model parsing)
-
Automatic user notifications (renewals, updates, damage checklist)
3. Accounting & Regulatory (DAC7)
This is where n8n saved us days of manual work.
-
Sync every booking to our ERP (Dokos → ERPNext)
-
Automatic VAT categorization
-
Generating accounting journal entries via API
-
Sending curated monthly ledgers to our accountant
-
Preparing DAC7 data exports
-
Cross-checking payouts between Stripe and ERP
-
Matching owner payouts with their invoices
This was previously a nightmare for a tiny team — n8n turned it into a predictable pipeline.
The ROI for a 2-person Startup
We always say internally:
“If n8n shuts down, we shut down too.”
Not because we depend on it blindly, but because it became the backbone that lets two people run a company that looks like a team of 10.
Some real benefits:
-
Several hours saved every single day
-
Near-zero manual accounting
-
Faster user response time
-
Instant partner onboarding
-
No-code ability to ship features that normally require backend dev time
-
Faster regulatory compliance (especially DAC7)
-
A more scalable, more resilient marketplace
I don’t think BikUp could have grown this quickly without it.
A Huge Thanks to the n8n Community
Every time we hit a roadblock, the community helped.
Every weird API call, webhook design, OAuth quirk — someone already had an answer.
We wanted to share this story to say: for small teams building real-world businesses, n8n is a superpower.
If some of you are curious, I can also share:
-
how we structure our workflows,
-
how we connect Stripe / ERPNext / PostHog / NocoDB together,
-
how we replaced dozens of SaaS tools using n8n alone.
Just let me know — always happy to contribute back.
