Self-hosted n8n Community Edition shows "Project Enterprise" and project limitation

Hello n8n Community,

I’m a new user who recently set up n8n self-hosted on a VPS (Hetzner) using Docker and the Orion setup script. Everything seems to be working correctly, and I can access my n8n instance via my custom subdomain.

My understanding was that the self-hosted Community Edition allows for unlimited workflows and full functionality without cost. However, when I access my n8n dashboard, I see a section labeled “Project” with an “Enterprise” tag next to it, and it indicates a limitation (e.g., “0” or “1” project available).

I’ve attached a screenshot of what I’m seeing.

My questions are:

  1. Is this behavior expected for the latest versions of the self-hosted Community Edition? I was under the impression that “Projects” were a feature of the Enterprise plan, but I’m seeing this limitation even on my self-hosted instance.
  2. Does this mean that if I want to use the “Projects” feature to organize my workflows, I would need to purchase an Enterprise license, even for a self-hosted setup?
  3. Have other users encountered this, and if so, what did you do to manage your workflows and organization without the “Projects” feature? Are there any recommended best practices or workarounds for organizing a large number of workflows in the Community Edition?

I’m trying to understand if I’ve misunderstood something about the licensing model or if there’s a configuration I missed. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

My Setup:

  • n8n version: Latest
  • Running n8n via: Docker (as per Orion setup)
  • Operating system: Ubuntu (on Hetzner VPS)

Thank you in advance for your help!

There are for sure limitations to the self-hosted Community Edition. See here.
