Hi everyone,
I’m experiencing a confusing and inconsistent behavior with the AI Agent when using tools in n8n.
Context:
- Using an AI Agent node with a tool configured (Microsoft Excel 365 – Append row).
- The tool is enabled and works correctly.
- The same tool works reliably in other executions.
- The agent is expected to call the tool to append rows to Excel.
Observed behavior:
There are two different behaviors depending on the agent’s response format:
- When the agent responds ONLY in natural language (no “Used tools” block shown):
- The tool is executed correctly.
- The row is appended to Excel as expected.
- When the agent response includes a block like the following:
[Used tools: Tool: Append_rows_to_table_in_Microsoft_Excel_365, Input: {…}, Result: [{“status”:“success”}]]
- The tool is NOT actually executed.
- No row is appended to Excel.
- The agent then continues with a conversational response in natural language.
This makes the behavior difficult to rely on, since the presence of the “Used tools” block does not consistently reflect a real tool execution.
Example output:

Then the agent continues with a conversational answer like:

Expected behavior:
- If the agent reports “Used tools”, the tool should always be executed.
- Tool execution should be consistent regardless of whether the agent continues with text or not.
- When the agent decides to use a tool, it should stop after the tool execution and not continue with a conversational response.
- Ideally, there should be a reliable way to strictly enforce tool usage or prevent additional text output.
What I’ve tried:
- Adjusting the system prompt to strongly instruct the agent to use the tool.
- Removing conversational instructions.
- Testing with simplified prompts.
Even with this, the behavior remains inconsistent.
Questions:
- Is this a known limitation of the AI Agent node?
- Is the “Used tools” block always guaranteed to represent a real tool execution?
- Are there recommended patterns to avoid this inconsistent behavior?
Environment:
- n8n: Self-hosted
- n8n version: 2.4.8
- Node: AI Agent
- Model: Azure OpenAI Chat Model

I agree that the AI agent tool should have certain parameters like ‘Only Use Tools’ , what i can say that the AI agent not using the tools problem mostly occurs in the bad or incomplete System prompts and sometimes the TOOL is not well configured, please consider more giving more tight system prompts and also a sample of output into the System prompt that would mention things like
{
‘Age’: “Value to be retrieved from Excel”
}
Something like that inside the system prompt would help the AI agent more, let me know if more strict system prompting and AI prompting does not work as they should. Hope this helps.

From my experience, the most reliable pattern in n8n is to use the Agent only to decide what action should be taken, and then execute the Excel node explicitly in the workflow. This avoids relying on non deterministic tool execution inside the Agent itself.

In my case, the fields that need to be filled by the Excel tool are already clearly defined both inside the Excel tool configuration and in the agent’s instructions, where it is explicitly told to use the tool. However, the issue still occurs.
I ran a test with 40 items in a single execution, and also 40 separate executions with one item each. In both scenarios, I observed the same behavior: the agent sometimes does not actually use the tool, even though it returns a “use tool” style output.
So at this point, the problem does not seem to be related to missing or unclear field descriptions in the system prompt, since those are already well specified and the issue persists.
Could this be related to the agent node’s internal handling of tool calls, or is there a known limitation or recommended configuration to ensure consistent tool execution?

In my case, the values that are written into Excel are extracted directly by the AI Agent from the conversation. Because of that, using a separate step where the agent outputs a JSON structure and then another Excel node executes the action actually introduces more points of failure. It requires enforcing a strict JSON format in the agent output and then trusting that structure before executing the Excel node, instead of letting the agent call the tool with the required fields directly.
If you have an example workflow where this pattern is implemented (agent → structured JSON output → Action) and the tests show consistent results—ideally around 99% reliability—I would really appreciate it if you could share it. That would help me understand how to implement this approach in a more robust way.
@JGOMEZ8168 This usually does not happen as once your tool is configured with prompts the AI agent must always pick that in use if it is being asked, and now as you have confirmed that it is not the fix, what i recommend is that what you are trying to do using AI agent do ti using your workflow, what i mean is that use google sheet node or excel in your case and fetch the data before the AI agent and then let the AI agent have it as a prompt, this is really a good approach just the only thing you have to worry about is your model’s context window, just use GPT-4o it has the best context window for these kind of tasks.
Hi @JGOMEZ8168 , that’s a fair point.
inside the tool node itself there’s a “Tool Description” field. That’s where you can tell the agent specifically when and how to use that tool. The agent reads that description to decide whether to call it or not, so being very explicit there tends to be more reliable than trying to control it only through the system prompt. Something like: Use this tool every time the user provides data that needs to be saved to Excel. Always call this tool directly without describing or confirming the action in text.
Also, setting temperature to 0 on your Azure OpenAI model helps a lot with consistency in tool usage.
