I am trying to work out whether paid n8n templates are a real thing or mostly a nice idea.
I became a verified creator recently, so selling is now an option for me. Before I go down that road, I would rather hear from people who have actually done it, on either side.
My doubt is simple. Anyone who can import a JSON file and connect their own credentials can usually build the workflow themselves, or find a free one that is close enough. And the people who cannot do that probably need someone to set it up for them, not a file. So who is left to buy the template itself?
Then again, a good template can save a skilled builder a full day, and a day is worth a lot more than most template prices. So maybe I have it wrong.
Things I would really like to know:
- Have you ever paid for an n8n template? What made it worth it, and roughly what did it cost?
- If you sell templates, do they actually sell? And where: the n8n library, Gumroad, your own site?
- Do buyers mostly want the file, or do they end up asking you to set it up for them?
- If you tried selling and stopped, what happened?
Honest answers welcome, including “no, nobody pays”. That is useful to know too.
From the agency side, here’s what we’ve seen with clients:
Most business owners don’t buy the template, they buy the outcome.
Even with a perfect JSON file, they get stuck on credentials, OAuth
apps, webhooks and edge cases. So “template + setup” sells far better
than “template alone”.
Where a paid template does make sense:
- Builders who know n8n but want to save a day on something fiddly
(Meta/WhatsApp webhooks, pagination, retry-safe CRM sync)
- Templates that come with a short video walkthrough and a test dataset
- Niche-specific ones (clinics, real estate, ecommerce) where the
logic is already tuned for that business
A model that seems to work: free template as the lead magnet, paid
setup/customization as the product. The free template builds trust,
and the people who can’t set it up become your clients.
Curious what others have seen on actual sales numbers.
I posted two automation kits on Gumroad, one paid and one free. Zero sales on the paid one so far, sad. People keep DMing me like ‘can u set dis up for my account pls’ instead of ‘where do I buy’. So I’m just gonna use the template as a teaser/sample and sell the setup service instead

The distinction you’re drawing between selling a template and selling the setup is the right one to focus on. From what I’ve seen in creator communities, the template itself rarely carries much price on its own because buyers can’t easily judge quality before purchase and many expect workflows to be shared freely. What tends to justify payment is the surrounding work: adapting it to a specific stack, handling credentials and edge cases, and being available when something breaks. That points toward packaging the template as a starting point plus scoped support rather than as a standalone product. Worth testing both with a small group before committing.
