I used npx n8n
on my pc and then opened the localhost URL where I am greeted with getting an activation key after signup, I did that and entered the key, but some features are locked, and it says upgrade to unlock.
I thought n8n was opensource

No n8n is not opensource.
You can still use it as the community edition. So not sure what activation key you are refering to.
