Hello,
I’ve just installed the open-source version of n8n on a VPS
Based on your experience, what are the main limitations of the open-source version compared to n8n Cloud?
So far, I’ve noticed:
- no project management support,
- only a single admin user available.
Are there any other important limitations I should be aware of?
Also, I have an important question:
is there any scenario where I would be forced to switch to a paid (enterprise) license, or can I keep using the open-source version indefinitely?
For context, I use n8n only for personal purposes, mainly to automate AI agents for my own website and internal processes (not for clients or third parties).
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
For personal use, that should be good enough, unless you have a strong need for workflow version history
good question. for personal ai agent use, open source is totally fine — your two observations are the main ones, yeah. project management is enterprise stuff, single-user thing just means no other team members can access it, but thats not relevant for personal workflows anyway. no forced upgrade path — you can run it indefinitely for personal use, licensing only applies if youre running it commercially (selling services built on n8n). honestly, if youre self-hosting on a vps already, you have full control anyway. only thing to watch: keep up with security patches, those matter more on self-hosted.
