I see the MCP use case sometimes a way for an LLM to access something else ‘consistently’, but all you get are generic explanations about what it does. If this means that an LLM acts as it’s own orchestrator, reaching out to MCPs to get/send data, then doesn’t that sound a lot like what n8n says on the can?
What actual use case, and high level flow, has been used as the best choice with an n8n flow, and why was it chosen over other choices/alternatives?
You can think of MCP as a standardized “tools layer” for LLMs, while n8n is still your orchestrator. MCP itself doesn’t replace n8n it just gives LLMs a consistent way to call tools and services. In n8n, this shows up in two main ways:
(1) using the MCP Client Tool node so your AI Agent can call external MCP servers (e.g. Brave Search, Freshdesk, custom backends) as tools behind a single node instead of wiring many HTTP/tool nodes yourself.
(2) using the MCP Server Trigger or instance level MCP access so external clients like Claude Desktop, Lovable, or ChatGPT (via an MCP gateway) can see and trigger selected n8n workflows as tools in their agent stacks, while n8n still handles the real automation and integrations.
Where MCP + n8n is “the best choice” is any scenario where you 1) already use n8n as the process/orchestration layer, and 2) want LLM agents (inside or outside n8n) to plug into many tools in a uniform way. Typical flows: an n8n AI Agent that can talk to multiple MCP servers (search, RAG, vendor APIs) and then write results to CRMs/DBs; or the opposite direction, where Claude/Desktop agents call into n8n via MCP to run complex, multi-step workflows that would be painful to model purely as MCP tools. In all of those, MCP is the “tool protocol”, and n8n remains the place where you orchestrate data flows, retries, error handling, and connections to non MCP systems.
